Nuove Falcone noises!

Hi,

I apologise for my lack of German - I only speak a little French!

I have a military version of the Nuovo Falcone, made around 1970, and I have noticed that it makes a whining ot whistling noise when I ride. The noise seems to coincide with engine speed, and it disappears when the clutch is pulled in. Can anyone advise as to where the problem might be? The chain is not tight, the oil level is correct. Any comments will be welcome.

Kind regards,

Peter..... and here is an on-line translation.....

Hallo zusammen,

Peter

Re: Nuove Falcone noises!

Hello Peter,

My NF militare also makes a whisteling noise when shutting the throttle, but it is only on certain rpm.
Will check, if pulling the cluntch will make it disappear too.
The noise definitely comes form the wheels of primary transmission.

The noise reminds me somewhat of a car in reverse gear, but not that loud.

Re: Nuove Falcone noises!

Many thanks! Your description of the noise sounding like a car in reverse gear, but not so loud, is exact.

What I need to know is - is this sound is normal for the Nuovo Falcone? Might the use of different oils in the engine have any effect on the noise, or is there likely to be something wrong, such as a bearing starting to fail, the cause of which I should examine. This is my first Moto Guzzi, so I am not familiar with how these engines run!

Kind regards,

Peter

Re: Nuove Falcone noises!

Hello Peter,

Seems like your NF makes the same noise as mine and on mine I had the cluntch out and also the camshaft. Nothing wrong, all bearings OK. That was 2500km ago. Noise was there befor and is still present.
So we can sssume, that the noise is normal.
And a NF is more like a traktor than an ordinary motorbike anyway :D

I use SAE20W50 oil now, but will turn to SEA50 sigle grade on next oil change(3000km to go now).

Re: Nuove Falcone noises!

Many thanks. I think I will live with the problem (if it is a problem....) for a little while and see how it develops. I will change the oil - probably for 20/50 - and see if this helps. It did occur to me than the clutch, having a helical gear drive, should have a thrust bearing behind it (?) to take the axial load. So far as I can see from the Parts List there is only a needle roller bearing in the clutch. How are the axial loads resolved - does anyone know? A failing or worn thrust bearing might be the cause of the noise.....

Any thoughts welcome,

Kind regards,

Peter

Re: Nuove Falcone noises!

There is a thrust bearing in the cluntch, but it is not pushed as in the usual way(hollow cluntch shaft with push rod) but pulled by the cluntch lever arm.I looked at it when 'I replaced the cluntch this spring, it was OK.

Re: Nuove Falcone noises!

Many thanks, but I was asking if there was a bearing behind the clutch to prevent the clutch body being pushed backwards by the helical driving gear - if the gears were straight cut there would be no such force on the clutch body, but the helical gears will produce this effect. Damage to such a bearing might result in the noise we are discussing, and the operation of the clutch lever, pulling on the clutch plates, might alleviate this rearwards force and stop the noise. At least, this is my theory!

But I do not have a good diagram to study the clutch design. Perhaps I should take the clutch apart, but I want to ride the bike as the summer has now arrived in London!

Kind regards, and thanks for your replies in English!

Re: Nuove Falcone noises!

There is no additional bearing, only a washer, seems there is not that much pressure to justify a thrust bearing.
Just mount a louder exhaust pipe, I use one of a HD Hydraglide, to "eliminate" all irritating noises :-)

Re: Nuove Falcone noises!

Hi Peter, I know the Primär Gears, also Coupling housing and the gear on the crank shaft are normly paired.
Asc Karl Lotze, he can tell you a lot.
The couplinghousing normly is mooving a bit in all directions and lock like loose. Thats normly.
It´s the gear in, and the clutch ist connected, then everything must be in laine and solid.

Sorry it´s hard to talk in englisch, but I habe not really an idea.

Kindest regards Peter (falconissimo)
